Upgrading your zbitx (v1) to zbitx v2 software.

Upgrading your zbitx (v1) to zbitx v2 software.

The zbitx (original) will be called zbitx v1 in this note to differentiate it from the v2 software.

The new software (v2) requires wifi access point to be created on the zbitx. You can do it by hand but it is just simpler to download the new image and burn it into an sd card.

This will wipe out the previous card’s data, etc. We will show you how to preserve your settings and bring them all to the new software.

You will need a fresh 32 gb sd card for this.

Step 1:

  1. Download the image file from https://drive.google.com/file/d/12lLTpae5ElLt63cgGeuNRREixa-01yyV/view?usp=sharing
  2. Use the raspberry pi imager to burn this image into the sd card
  3. Take out your previous sd card and plug in the freshly burned sd card into the raspberry pi
  4. Boot!

Step 2:

The front panel’s firmware also needs to be updated. You will download and install this on the front panel

  1. Download the latest firmware file from https://github.com/afarhan/zbitxv2/blob/main/zbitx_front_panel_v2.ino.uf2
  2. Power off the zbitx
  3. Attach a usb cable from the CAT port of the zbitx to your computer (Don’t attach to the port marked USB!).
  4. Holding the tuning button down, power up the zbitx. This will put the front panel into upload mode. The screen will light up dimly white. You computer will now report the front panel as a  new flash drive
  5. Copy the uf2 file uploaded in the step 2.1 to the front panel.

Once you have this going, you can start testing the radio.

Step 3 (Optional):

You might want to restore the old settings like your logbook, etc.

For this, you can plug the old flash card your computer and copy the following two files to your computer:

-/home/pi/sbitx/data/user_settings.in (this holds your callsign, etc.)
-/home/pi/sbitx/data/sbitx.db (this is the logbook)

Now, plug the new sd card with the v2 software and copy these files back into your zbitx’s /home/pi/sbitx/data directory (this will overwrite the supplied files).
